Curriculum
- Children participate in a curriculum that meets the requirements
of and incorporates the New Zealand state curriculum and
operates under the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi.
Montessori is non-political and non-denominational. Children
participate in all Ministry of Education required tests.
- ‘Practical life’ is part of the Montessori curriculum. Children
participate in activities related to food preparation, care of
plants, environmental care and personal care.
- Cultural studies subjects include history, geography, science,
music, art and drama.
- ‘Peace education is fundamental to Montessori. The four
dimensions of self awareness, community awareness, cultural
awareness and environmental awareness are taught. For dealing
with conflict resolution, children have been clearly instructed
on use of the ‘peace mat’ and ‘peace stone’ and use this
effectively to resolve conflict, usually without adult
intervention. They may request another child or teacher to act
as a mediator if they are unable to resolve the conflict on
their own.
- Several of the children in our class are German speaking. Some
of their parents voluntarily assist us with implementing a
German language programme.
- Parents have a high level of commitment to the Montessori
philosophy and contribute greatly to our school community.
